Ceramic coating vs wax? For most people keeping their car a while, the coating wins. A ceramic coating lasts years, 3 or more, while a wax wears off in months. It isn’t for everyone, mind. If you don’t need one, I’ll tell you.
What a coating does that a wax doesn't
Wax sits on top of the paint. It looks lovely when it’s fresh, then you’re back out topping it up. A ceramic coating bonds to the paint and lasts 3, 5 or 8 years, and Ceramic Pro Gold is a lifetime coating.
Both add gloss. Where a coating wins is how long it lasts. Water beads and rolls off it, and washing the car takes a lot less effort.
Who doesn't need a coating
You might be better off without one if:
- you enjoy waxing and do it regularly
- you’re selling the car soon
- you just want it kept clean, in which case a car valet or Maintenance Care Valeting may suit you better
If that’s you, I’ll say so.
Who a coating suits
It makes sense if you’re keeping the car a good few years and want it looking right without spending every Sunday on it. You’ll need the paint put right first. And it won’t stop stone chips or scratches, so don’t let anyone tell you it will.
Why the prep matters
Whatever’s in the paint gets locked under the coating. My guide to preparing for a ceramic coating goes through it step by step. So every car gets a safe wash, decontamination and at least a single-stage machine polish first, then the coating’s cured indoors under IR lamps. Ideally that’s 3 days. My guide to what a ceramic coating costs explains what’s included and what affects the price.
Dealer packs vs a studio-applied coating
If you’ve bought a new car, you’ve probably been offered a paint protection pack. Some are fine. Ask what prep gets done first, and how long anyone actually spends on your car.
Here, I do it myself, in the indoor studio in Tattenhall, once the paint’s been checked and prepped. I’ve been Ceramic Pro approved since 2016, so you know what’s on your car and who put it there. My personal guarantee lasts for as long as you own the car, as long as it has a yearly maintenance visit (5 years if the visits stop).
Ceramic coating vs wax FAQs
Is ceramic coating worth it?
